Climbing in Mikros Viros Serres
The crag “Little Viros” is located 7 km northeast of the city of Serres and is along with the crag “Simaies” the common climbing destination for the climbers of Serres. Although due to the south / southeast orientation it is not offered for those very hot days of the summer. The high altitude (500m) and the proximity to the canyon make it climbable some not very hot summer afternoons.
Access – Approach
Signs access to the monastery of St. Prodromos are at both entrances of the city and within it. But if you get lost in the city head towards St. John (suburb east of Serres) and turn after the bridge (sign for the monastery) to the antenna park which is visible from the road. Those coming from the east (Drama-Kavala) can turn 600 meters after the Hospital of Serres heading north to the park of antennas. Arriving at the monastery of St. Nikolas we see the opposite side of the stream the crag. At the next intersection which will lead you left to Rachovitsa (New Elvetia) you park right on the dirt road and then follow the path with “cuckoos”(piles of stones which indicate sign) that lead us to an olive grove (5 min of walking), which is at the top of the hill, just above the crag.
The crag is sporty – except of the route ENIGMA which is a demanding traditional route. Most of the routes are small bouldery routes and you can repeat all of them with a 50m rope and 8-10 quickdraws.
